Most roundups of ranking factors statistics recycle the same unsourced numbers until nobody remembers where they came from. This one does the opposite: every figure below is pulled from a named, large-sample study, and where the studies disagree, we say so. If you plan your SEO around ranking factors statistics, you want the ones that survive contact with real search data — not the ones that sound good in a slide.
Read these as directional truth about how Google behaves at scale, not as a checklist. Correlation studies show what winning pages tend to have in common; they can’t prove any single factor caused the ranking. Keep that in mind and the numbers below get a lot more useful.
The visibility reality: most pages get nothing
Start with the number that reframes everything else. According to Ahrefs‘ 2023 study of roughly 14 billion pages, 96.55% of all pages in their index get zero organic traffic from Google. Another 1.94% pick up between one and ten visits a month. Add those up and the vast majority of the web is functionally invisible in search.
Backlinks are a big part of why. Ahrefs found that pages with more referring domains consistently earned more traffic and ranked for more keywords, and that of the roughly 20 million pages in their sample with zero referring domains, only 2,997 pulled more than 1,000 monthly visits — about 1 in 6,671. Publishing a page is not distribution. Getting it seen is a separate job, and the data says most sites never do it.
Where the clicks actually go
Ranking on page one is not the finish line — position within page one decides almost everything. Backlinko’s analysis of 4 million Google results found the first organic result takes 27.6% of all clicks, and the top three results together take 54.4%. Everything below that fights over the scraps.
The same study quantified what a single position is worth. Moving up one spot lifted CTR by 32.3% on average, but the gain is front-loaded: jumping from position #2 to #1 produced a 74.5% relative CTR increase, while climbing from #10 to #9 barely registered. Two practical takeaways:
- The difference between #3 and #1 is worth far more traffic than the difference between #8 and #5.
- Effort spent nudging a page that already ranks #2 or #3 upward usually beats chasing a brand-new keyword from scratch.
What still correlates with rankings
Backlinko’s ranking-factors study (11.8 million results, published 2020 and refreshed through 2025) is the most-cited correlation dataset in SEO, and its strongest signal is links. The #1 result had an average of 3.8x more backlinks than positions #2 through #10. Referring domains told the same story, with the top result showing roughly three times as many linking sites as the rest of page one.
Two more findings from that study are worth keeping:
- Content length clusters, it doesn’t climb. The average first-page result ran about 1,447 words, but word count was evenly distributed across the top ten — longer did not mean higher.
- Engagement tracks with rank. The average time on site for a first-page result was 2.5 minutes, and engagement correlated with position, even if it doesn’t prove causation.
The through-line: authority (measured by links) and content that holds attention are the factors the data keeps rewarding.
The stats that debunk common myths
Just as useful is what the data says doesn’t matter as much as people think. From the same Backlinko dataset:

None of this means speed, titles, or schema are pointless — they affect clicks, eligibility for rich results, and user experience. It means treating them as ranking levers, rather than hygiene, is a misread of the numbers. Spend the saved energy on links and content quality instead.
AI search is rewriting the SERP
The biggest change since these classic studies is what now sits above the organic results. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords before and after Google’s US rollout of AI Overviews and found a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview was present. A #1 ranking simply converts to fewer clicks than it used to.
Semrush‘s study of 200,000 keywords adds detail on how those AI answers pick sources. On average an AI Overview cited about 11 URLs, and there was only a 20–26% overlap between those citations and the top ten organic results. In other words, ranking on page one does not guarantee you get quoted in the AI answer above it. Both studies agree AI Overviews skew heavily informational — Semrush found roughly 80% of them targeted informational queries, and Ahrefs put informational intent at 99.2% of AI Overview triggers.
What this means for your SEO
Translate the numbers into a short priority list you can act on this quarter:
- Earn links to your money pages. The single most consistent signal across every study is referring domains. A handful of relevant links will move a competitive page further than another 500 words.
- Push page-two pages onto page one, and #3s toward #1. Because 54.4% of clicks land in the top three, and moving #2 to #1 lifts CTR 74.5%, your existing near-winners are the best ROI on the site.
- Stop optimizing for debunked signals. Don’t chase word counts or obsess over exact-match titles when the data shows no ranking lift; keep speed and schema as hygiene, not strategy.
- Track AI visibility separately from rankings. With a 34.5% CTR hit under AI Overviews and only ~20–26% citation overlap, you need to know whether you’re being cited in AI answers, not just where you rank.
