The average established SEO platform is cited in 131 AI answers. The average “GEO” tool — software built specifically to get brands mentioned in AI — is cited in just 5. Two of them (Goodie AI, Scrunch AI) are cited zero times, anywhere. The AI-visibility industry has an AI-visibility problem.
Who AI actually cites
Total AI answers (across all four engines) that cite each tool’s domain. Bars marked + hit our 100-citations-per-engine ceiling — the true number is higher.
Every AI engine cites differently
The same 20 tools, scored per engine. Perplexity is by far the most generous citer; Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT are the most selective. Intensity = citation count.
Where the citations live
Of all 6,322 citations we counted, Perplexity accounts for more than a third — it cites 1.66× as often as ChatGPT. If you optimize for one engine’s citations first, this is the order of return.
What we didn’t expect
Freemium beats Moz
Seobility, a free-tier German tool, is cited more than Moz — because free tools get embedded in tutorials, and tutorials are what AI reads.
Plugins punch up
Two WordPress plugins outrank most paid platforms. “How to set up Yoast” content is everywhere, so AI treats them as canonical.
The disappeared
Ubersuggest and Searchmetrics score a flat zero. A brand can be huge on Google and invisible to AI at the same time.
Single-engine brands
93% of AnswerThePublic’s citations come from Perplexity alone. Concentration like this is fragile — one model update erases you.
No estimates. Real citations.
Most “AI search” commentary is vibes. This isn’t. For each of 56 tools we queried Ahrefs Brand Radar — the same live dataset behind SEO Rocket’s AI Visibility feature — and counted the real AI answers that cite the tool’s own domain (cited_domain_subdomains), across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity, in the US index, in August 2026.
What the numbers mean — and their limits
- A count is citations of the domain, not brand-name mentions. It measures whether AI sends its answer’s sources to that tool’s site — the closest proxy to “AI-driven referral visibility.”
- We capped each engine at 100 citations per tool to bound cost. 14 tools hit that ceiling on at least one engine, shown as
+. For them the real figure is higher — so the leaderboard understates the giants, not the challengers. - US index only. A tool strong in another market can read lower here. Zero means “not cited in the US AI index,” not “worthless.”
Every figure on this page traces to a live API call. The raw dataset is reproducible with one script — no hand-picking, no survey, no guesswork.
